Shelf Hall was put to use in the Second World War to house Italian prisoners of war. Legend has it that the head of John the Baptist was buried in nearby Halifax after his execution.

Bradford, a short distance away, is the location for the award-winning National Media Museum, which houses a five-storey IMAX screen.
