Preston Primary School designs the house of the future

1st November 2007

Pupils at Preston Primary School have been busy designing the house of the future in a bid to win a competition organised by local house builders, Westbridge Homes.

Children in years four, five and six were asked to design the type of home they think we will live in by the year 2050. Westbridge Homes, a Hull based company who has developments all over Yorkshire decided to run the competition to encourage community involvement with residents close to its new Farrier Mews development in Preston.

The drawings entered into the competition were all very unique and well thought out but there was one clear winner.

The winning design, created by Chloe McKay, age ten, was chosen for its creativity and for the design’s emphasis on the green issues which Chloe thinks we will continue to face in the future. The drawing depicts a house, built on wheels equipped with solar panels, wind turbines, built in compost bin, a water funnel to catch rain water and more interestingly is fully covered in grass to help it blend into its surroundings.

Caroline Hardaker, Westbridge Homes’ sales and marketing manager was responsible for choosing the winning design and says: “It was a difficult decision because the children had all obviously put a lot of effort into the competition. Chloe’s drawing stood out because of its strong environmental message. I’ll be passing it on to our architects and who knows, you might see some of the design’s features appear in Westbridge Homes in the future. I’m just not sure about the wheels!”

Pat Grayson, secretary of Preston Primary School, said: “It was a great project to be involved in and the children really enjoyed it. Some important messages were highlighted by the competition including the environmental aspects which Chloe picked up on. We would like to thank Westbridge Homes for organising the project.”

A Westbridge Homes representative will be presenting Chloe with a framed certificate and a prize of free cinema tickets for her and her classmates to enjoy. Her winning design will also be displayed in the show house at the Farrier Mews development in Preston for all to see. The school will be awarded with much needed IT and cookery equipment for their participation in the project.

A special assembly has been organised for Monday 19th November at 10:00am  at the school where the presentations will take place.
