Young artists go head-to-head

1st February 2008

Young artists from the Hull School of Art and Design will be pitting their wits and artistic talents against each other to win the right to create a sculpture for a prestigious new housing development.

Five students from the college will go head-to-head in front of a judging panel comprising representatives of Westbridge Homes. The judging panel will select a sculpture that will take pride of place in the communal garden at Westbridge’s Sanderson’s Mews, Ella Street development.

Westbridge Homes’ sales manager, Caroline Hardaker, said: “This will be a very exciting project for the artists involved and will see them battling it out to convince the judges that their respective sculpture should be the one that stands in the gardens at Sanderson’s Mews.

“Five students have been selected to pitch their work and we are expecting the final selection process to be a mix of Dragon’s Den and the X-Factor. For these students, who all want to work professionally as artists, there is a lot at stake. For them this will put them in a real commission situation and will be an opportunity for them to prove their artistic acumen.

“We want the sculpture to complement and enhance the development. We have worked hard at Sanderson’s Mews to ensure that the 28-homes are   sympathetic to the style and aesthetics of the Avenues area and, in maintaining that Victorian-era style, have real character. We would like the sculpture to also be an embodiment of those aims.”

Harry Hodgson, Hull School of Art and Design 3D programme leader said: “Working with Westbridge Holmes is an excellent opportunity for our students to work with a respected client on their exciting new development. The students are developing a range of creative ideas for a sculptural focal point for the Sanderson Green area of the new development and are looking forward to presenting their creative endeavours to the Westbridge team later this month.”

Sanderson’s Mews comprises apartments and two and three-bedroom houses from £129,995.

Members of the media are invited to attend the judging event, which takes place at the Hull School of Art & Design on Tuesday, March 18th. Students will be available for interview and photographs.
