Mermaid’s Tail beats off competition

1st March 2008

A design student from Hull College will see her iconic sculpture design sculpture take pride of place at a new property development in Hull after winning a prestigious competition.

Jamie Verwey, a full-time HND 3D design student at Hull College of Art and Design, competed against six other students to win a competition held to select a sculpture to be located in the communal garden at Westbridge Homes’ Sanderson’s Mews development at Ella Street, Hull.

The students went head-to-head in front of a judging panel comprising Westbridge Homes’ managing director Peter Lee, sales director Caroline Hardaker and sales negotiator Jan Clarke.

Students had spent several months prior to the competition designing concepts based around the name Ella, which means “beautiful fairy woman” and that reflected the peaceful, contemporary and classic nature of the Victorian area that Sanderson’s Mews is located in.

Jamie, 21, won the competition, which took place on Tuesday (March 18th), with her design ‘Mermaid’s Tail’. She is now hard at work developing the two metre high stainless steel sculpture which will then be prepared for installation.

Westbridge Homes’ sales manager, Caroline Hardaker, said: “The students’ work was carried out to a very high standard and we were all very impressed.

It was a tough decision but, in the end, we felt that Jamie’s design had the edge over the others and really captured the spirit of the area.”

Harry Hodgson, Hull School of Art and Design 3D programme leader said: “Working with Westbridge Holmes was an excellent opportunity for our students to work with a respected client on their exciting new development.”

Sanderson’s Mews comprises apartments and two and three-bedroom houses from £129,995.
