Building site safety message hammered home to pupils in Keyingham
1st March 2008
An East Yorkshire-based property development company today visited a local primary school to speak to the children about the importance of building site safety as work commences on a new housing scheme close to the school.
Peter Lee, a Westbridge Homes managing director, attended Keyingham Primary School to speak in the morning assembly to introduce himself, the company and explain about the importance of staying away from the building site at Russell Drive, which is only a five minute walk away from the school. After listening to a presentation by Mr Lee, the children also received a colourful Westbridge Homes building site safety leaflet to take home, introducing their building site safety mascot, Wesley the Westbridge Beaver.
Peter Lee said, “Building sites are not playgrounds and can be extremely dangerous if the appropriate health and safety standards are not adhered to, so for children this area is out of bounds unless properly supervised.”
“It is our intention to work closely with the school to provide the children with as many opportunities as possible to get involved with the development, to visit the site and learn about construction. It is my hope that by coming in to speak to the children today and providing them with these opportunities it will prevent them from playing on the building site,” Mr Lee said.
Sandra Edmiston, head teacher at Keyingham Primary School said, “The children really enjoyed meeting Mr Lee today and hearing about building site
safety. They are all very much looking forward to visiting the building site at a later date and learning more about construction. I am confident today’s assembly has shown them the dangers of building sites and will make them think twice before playing on them.”
Work commenced on the Long Meadows development at the start of February and Westbridge Homes are planning to work closely with the school to provide pupils with an opportunity to learn more about health and safety on building sites and an understanding of how houses are built. The site manager will work closely with the school to become a regular and friendly face to the pupils.
Westbridge Homes always work with the local communities in which they operate and understand the importance of neighbourhood relations.
The new development in Keyingham will comprise a range of two, three and four-bedroom houses and apartments. The high specification homes range from 504 sq ft to 1,155 sq ft and have been designed to offer maximum use of space and offer something for everyone.
